The Quakes set a new record, both ConcaChampions teams seem ready & more | Matchday 10

No silver linings to be found for the Union, no No. 9 for NYCFC, a vibe recovery for Cincy & a curse in Miami

Between Concacaf Champions Cup and the US Open Cup, most MLS teams have been playing three-match weeks on-and-off for more than a month. But this was the first mostly full Wednesday slate (there were 11 games), which, as we warned you on last Monday’s Soccerwise, would mean:

  1. Lots of rotated squads.
  2. Lots of weird results.

Mid-spring is, in other words, when MLS is at its most MLS-y.

Ok, in we go:

We Gotta Go Now

LAFC are one of those teams that have been doing double-game weeks just about all year long thanks to Concacaf Champions Cup. And it had really been showing lately – never moreso than in last weekend's 4-1 loss to the Quakes, followed by Wednesday's listless scoreless home draw vs. Colorado.

The good news:

  • Between the return of Aaron Long and Stephen Eustaquio from injury, and homegrown Jude Terry creeping every so slightly into the rotation, LAFC have a little bit more depth than they did a couple weeks ago.
  • With David Martínez’s ascent, they now have a third attacker who can brute force a win via sheer talent. As so:

David Martínez continues his unreal form with a lovely opener for LAFC!

Minnesota, who played better soccer on the day, mostly don’t have guys like that (I’m including James Rodríguez, who made his first MLS start, in that assessment). So their margins for error are smaller.
